Supreme Commander 2 PC Gamer Review

The latest installment in the Supreme Commander series has finally arrived, and with it comes a mix of familiar gameplay and some noticeable improvements. As a seasoned fan of the franchise, I was excited to dive back into the world of RTS domination, but also curious about what changes Gas Powered Games had in store for us.

One of the first things that struck me as somewhat lacking was the tutorial mission's failure to cover unit arrangement on the battlefield. While this may not seem like a major issue at first, it can lead to some initial confusion when trying to get your units set up just right. However, once you get past this hurdle, selecting units and issuing orders remains as easy as ever.

The controls have remained largely unchanged from the original game, which is both good and bad news. On one hand, fans of the series will feel right at home with the familiar layout and functionality. On the other hand, new players may find themselves struggling to adjust to the slightly archaic control scheme.

Visually, Supreme Commander 2 doesn't appear to be a significant upgrade from its predecessor. The units and animations are mostly similar, if not identical, to those in the original game. While they're still well-done, it would have been nice to see some more personality injected into the environments. As it stands, the terrain can feel quite bare and lacking in detail.

That being said, the game's ability to render large numbers of units across massive battlefields is truly impressive. It's clear that a lot of effort went into optimizing performance for this title. In fact, I was able to run the game with all settings maxed without experiencing any slowdown or lag.

One area where Supreme Commander 2 does show improvement over its predecessor is in terms of running performance. Many players have reported difficulty getting their PCs to run the original game at high settings, but Gas Powered Games seems to have made some tweaks that make the sequel more accessible to a wider range of hardware configurations.

All things considered, Supreme Commander 2 feels like a solid, if unspectacular, addition to the series. While it may not offer any revolutionary new features or stunning visual upgrades, it's still a fun and engaging RTS experience for fans of the genre. Just don't expect anything too groundbreaking in terms of graphics or gameplay innovation.
